Full of beauty, charm, history and culture, the city of Winston-Salem is located in central North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad region. It is the fourth-largest city in the state and the largest city in Forsyth County, with a population of approximately 230,000 people in the city and 500,000 in its metropolitan statistical area (MSA).
Traditionally associated with tobacco, textile and the furniture industries, the city was established in 1913 when the town of Winston joined with the Moravian town of Salem. Today, the city’s largest employer is Wake Forest University Medical Center, and is home to corporations such as R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc., Branch Banking & Trust Company (BB&T), TW Garner Food Company, HanesBrands, Lowes Foods Stores, Southern Community Bank, Blue Rhino, ISP Sports and the Piedmont Triad Research Park.
Considered North Carolina’s “City of the Arts,” Winston-Salem has a wealth of historic, cultural and entertainment opportunities for everyone from young, urban singles to families ready to settle in their home for life to active adults ready to retire. The city’s Downtown District thriving with a variety of residences, restaurants, bars and entertainment, and the city and its suburbs are filled with a wide range of wonderful neighborhoods that can meet your needs.
Attractions in Winston-Salem include the Moravian settlements of Old Salem and Historic Bethabara, Reynolda Village, Reynolda Gardens and the Reynolda House Museum of Art; Horne Creek Historic Farm; Tanglewood Park, SciWorks, The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem, and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA). Winston-Salem is also home to the first Arts Council, the National Black Theatre Festival, RiverRun International Film Festival and the Trade Street Arts District, as well as many colleges and universities, including Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Salem College, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Piedmont Bible College and Forsyth Technical Community College.
